OnwarderStart writing

Write the whole novelwithout losing the thread.

Your story bible is a click from the page, and a continuity check warns you when someone who died in chapter four walks back in. When the last scene is done, Onwarder makes the ebook and the paperback interior.

Free on any computer or phone, for good: no account, no time limit. Cloud from $10 a month.

Chapter 19, first draft

The innkeeper looked up from the bar and smiled. Hesper reached for his usual cup before he had finished crossing the room. “Back so soon,” she said.

Possible contradiction. Your notes say Hesper died in chapter 4, and the inn burned down with her.

Your revision

Half the roof was open sky. Kaelen set two coins down on what was left of the bar, the way Hesper would have made him, and nobody came to take them.

Try it: write a line that brings Hesper back, and a demo check flags it. This needs JavaScript, which is off or has not loaded.

A demo of how a continuity check works, with the two facts on Hesper's card: it only looks for Hesper acting alive or the inn still trading. The real check compares a scene with the facts you recorded.

An illustrative continuity check. It flags; you choose the words.

Before you choose a tool

Every writer of a long book has one of these stories.

Six problems writers describe again and again, in their own words from public Reddit threads, and what Onwarder does about each. None of these writers are talking about Onwarder.

Lost work and sync disasters

A laptop dies, a cloud folder conflicts, a file will not open, and a year of a book is gone.

I used to use scrivener, but my last pc fried and I lost everything. I should have had a backup but I didn’t.

A writer on r/fantasywriters,

I have lost everything at one point, and it forced me to rewrite a book. Which turned out better than the first time

A writer on r/writing,

What Onwarder does

Onwarder saves as you type, on your device, with no account, and saves your whole library to one file whenever you like. With Cloud, every book you write is backed up automatically, on every device you write on. How your work is saved.

Losing track of a long book

Eye colours change, the dead come back, a promise from chapter three is never paid off.

The hardest part isn't creating ideas, it's remembering all the little details months later when you're 50k words in.

A writer on r/fantasywriters,

I find my head works fine up to about 30K words but somewhere past that things start slipping.

A writer on r/writing,

What Onwarder does

The story bible is a click from the page, story events record who knew what and when, and the continuity check warns when a dead character walks back in. No AI needed.

Tools that take a weekend to learn

Hours of setup, templates and settings before a single word of the novel.

I always end up getting stuck right at the learning curve, which usually puts me off.

A writer on r/fantasywriters,

I just wrote my last book in Scrivener. Although it's preferred by a lot of writers, it's too much for me.

A writer on r/writing,

What Onwarder does

Open Onwarder and type. No account, no setup and no course first; the story bible fills in as you need it.

Subscriptions and lock-in

Another monthly fee, a format only one app can open, and the fear the app shuts down.

Even with a one-time purchase, I rather not spend money on something that might terminate or might not work after purchase.

A writer on r/writers,

Would it also be not too harsh to ask if it can be not too expensive on the subscription fees or a permanent one?

A writer on r/writing,

What Onwarder does

Writing is free for good. Every book exports whole, at any time, on any plan: Word, EPUB, Markdown, PDF, or one file of your whole library.

AI pushed in, and trained on your book

Writing tools adding AI nobody asked for, and nobody sure where the manuscript goes.

If I just use a simple google doc, could that be used to train ai?

A writer on r/writers,

Does anyone have any software they recommend that AI won't be sifting through?

A writer on r/WritingHub,

What Onwarder does

AI is off for every book unless you turn it on, and Onwarder never uses your writing to train AI.

Formatting and export pain

The book is done, and then a week of fighting Word, compile settings and the KDP previewer.

Used to use Scrivener, but it's lack of portability and the struggle of exporting made me sadly abandon it. Now I use Word.

A writer on r/writing,

A bit annoying that I have to scrap all of that and do a PDF completely differently.

A writer on r/selfpublish,

What Onwarder does

When the last scene is done, Onwarder makes the EPUB and a paperback interior PDF at 5 by 8, 5.5 by 8.5 or 6 by 9 inches. Check each file in the store's previewer before you publish.

Read all 43 excerpts, grouped by problem, with their threads

What makes a writing tool worth it.

The book you end up with, and how sure you can be that you will get there, against how long it takes and what it costs you. Here is Onwarder on all four.

A worn leather book on a dark surface, lit from above by a floating gold quest marker.

The book you want

A whole novel, finished, and in readers' hands.

Consistent from the first chapter to the last, and ready for the stores. Finishing turns the manuscript into the files a store, a printer and a narrator ask for. You check each file and publish it under your own name; Onwarder never publishes for you and takes no rights. With no account, it makes EPUB, Word, Markdown and PDF files, including paperback interiors. Private readers and the book page are part of Cloud.

  1. Send it to private readers

A link you can revoke. Readers comment on exact passages, and you decide what changes.

  2. Fill in the publishing profile

Subtitle, series, blurb, author bio, categories, keywords and an ISBN for each format, with the ISBN checked as you enter it.

  3. Choose a cover

Upload your own art, sized for the stores, or use a designed cover made from your title and name. No AI draws it.

  4. Make the ebook

An EPUB with your cover, ISBN, copyright page and back matter. Our EPUB exporter is tested with EPUBCheck; check your exported book in the retailer's previewer. Word, Markdown and PDF too.

  5. Typeset the paperback

A paperback interior PDF at 5 by 8, 5.5 by 8.5 or 6 by 9 inches, with the page count and spine width your cover artist needs. Check it in KDP's previewer before you order a proof.

  6. Keep the record of how it was written

What you wrote here, what you brought in, and the AI changes it recorded you accepting, as a PDF or JSON file. It describes; it does not certify.

  7. Pitch the audiobook

A pack for narrators and audio publishers: blurb, characters, a pronunciation list, word count and estimated listening hours. Nothing goes in unless you tick it.

  8. Work through the launch checklist

It ticks what Onwarder can see, from the profile to the paperback file, and leaves the rest for you. Advice only: it never stops an export.

  9. Publish a page for the book

onwarder.com/books/your-title, with the blurb, formats and where to buy, and your cover if you uploaded it as a JPEG (otherwise the title and author stand in its place). It shows a copy you publish, and you can take it down at any time.

Proof it works

See every part before you trust it with a book.

The real Studio, not a mock-up. Everything here is in free Onwarder, on any device, with no account.

Everything a long novel needs. All of it free.

Your manuscript in the middle, and every character, place and promise behind it one click away. None of it needs AI, and none of it needs an account.

Level up, and the book remembers.

For LitRPG and progression writers. Give a character System details and change them as the story does. A new level, experience, a skill or ability, a title or a quest is recorded as an event; log it against a scene, and it appears in that chapter's System changes.

The last of the Ashfall guard went down on one knee and stayed there. Kaelen kept his shield up until the man's sword hit the flagstones.

The System spoke in the quiet after, the way it always did, as if it had been waiting politely for the noise to stop.

Something settled behind his ribs, heavier than a breath. The shield felt lighter. The yard felt smaller.

He tried the stance he had watched the old sergeant use a hundred times, and this time his body knew it.

A soldier and a thief walk into the same tavern and notice different things. Character notes hold what each one wants and has not learned yet; whose eyes a scene uses is your craft choice.

One tavern drawn twice. On the left, cold blue, a soldier's first-person view marked COVER, EXIT, THREAT LOW and WEAPON READY. On the right, warm gold, the same room marked STORY, EMOTION, CONNECTION and INTENT.

Time to start

Writing in seconds. Bring the book you already have.

No account to make, nothing to install and no course to sit through first.

  1. Open Onwarder

In any browser, on a computer or a phone. No account, no download, no setup. Or download the app.

  2. Bring the book you have

Import your Word manuscript in one step. It keeps chapters, headings, bold and italics, and shows you what it found before anything is saved.

Everything for writing is free. Cloud keeps the book on every device.

Your Cloud books, with their history and files, stay readable and downloadable for 90 days after Cloud ends. We email you before that period ends, then those Cloud books are deleted. Each device keeps its own copy of your writing. Deleting the Cloud books does not affect writing on a device. Renew while your Cloud books are still there and they are kept. After deletion, renew and deliberately sync again to put writing from a device back in Cloud. Every book exports whole for as long as it is kept. Storage is counted in binary units: 1 GB is about 1 GB, and 10 GB about 10 GB.

Onwarder is free, and stays free

Your own AI: off unless you turn it on.

Onwarder works fully without AI. If you already pay for Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, connect it to your book, and it can explain your own story back to you while you draft. What else it may do is your choice, book by book. Onwarder never uses your writing to train AI.

It reads and suggests. It cannot change a word. Onwarder's server refuses every change a connected AI asks for, so this does not rely on the AI behaving well. Your manuscript and story notes change only when you change them.

Off until you allow it. AI access starts off for every book. Allow it for one book in that book's settings, and turn it off again whenever you like.

Ready-made roles. Ask your AI to work as a developmental editor, line editor, continuity checker, beta reader, LitRPG system balancer or voice check, or write your own role for a book. Each one works within what that book allows.

No AI credits. We don't sell AI or charge for it. Connect the plan you already pay for; your provider's terms apply. We never train AI on your book, and Onwarder's servers never call an AI model.

Questions writers ask before they start.

Is Onwarder free?

Yes. Writing in Onwarder is free on every device, with no account and no time limit: in any browser today, on a computer or a phone, and in Onwarder for Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone. Onwarder Cloud is the paid part, at $10 a month or $99 a year, free for your first 30 writing days. Free and Cloud, line by line.

So how does Onwarder make money?

From Cloud. Writing stays free; writers who want their library on every device, backed up as they write, shared with readers or connected to their own AI pay for Cloud. We do not sell your data, sell AI credits or show adverts.

Will I lose my work?

Onwarder saves as you type, on your device, and you can save your whole library to one file whenever you like. With Cloud, every change is backed up as you write, with versions you can go back to. If two devices change the same words, Onwarder asks which to keep. Nothing is lost. If Cloud ends, sync pauses. Your Cloud books stay readable and downloadable for 90 days, with their history and files, then they are deleted. We email you before that period ends. Each device keeps its own copy of your writing, which Cloud deletion does not affect. After deletion, renew and deliberately sync again to put writing from a device back in Cloud. How your work is saved.

Can I bring the book I am already writing?

Yes. Import your Word manuscript in one step; Onwarder keeps chapters, headings, bold and italics and shows you what it found before anything is saved. Start with a copy, and keep your original until you are happy.

Can I get my book out again?

Always. Every book exports whole, at any time, on any plan, trial spent or not: Word, EPUB, Markdown, PDF, or one file of your whole library. That promise is written into the terms.

Do I have to write with AI?

No. Writing, story planning and learning do not require an AI account. Use assistance for the tasks you choose, or write every word yourself. Neither choice makes you more or less of an author.

Do you train on my book?

No. Onwarder does not use your manuscript to train AI models. If you connect your own AI, what it reads goes to that provider under its terms and data settings, so check them. Saving to your Onwarder account and allowing AI access are separate choices. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your data.

I already use Scrivener, Word or Google Docs. Why change?

You do not have to change everything. Bring one chapter, try the story bible and the continuity check, and export it back if you prefer. Where another tool is better, our comparison pages say so. Every comparison.

Is there a desktop app?

Onwarder for Mac: Available. Onwarder for Windows: Available. Onwarder for Linux: Available. Books you keep on your own computer are free and need no account. With Cloud, your whole library is there too, even offline. Download.

What works today, and what is still coming?

Onwarder for Mac: Available. Onwarder for Windows: Available. Onwarder for Linux: Available. Onwarder for iPhone: Beta. Onwarder for Android: Coming soon. Onwarder in your browser: Available. Move a book between devices with an .onwarder file. Today: automatic backup to Cloud; and sync between your devices.

More questions (10)
Is there a phone app?

Onwarder for iPhone: Beta. Onwarder for Android: Coming soon. The whole of Onwarder, free, not a cut-down companion. Onwarder also works in your phone's browser, free and with no account.

Does Onwarder publish my book?

No. Finishing makes the files and the page; you upload them to the stores yourself, under your own accounts, and keep your rights and your royalties. Check each file in the store's own previewer before you publish.

Is Onwarder a book generator?

Onwarder is an author-first writing studio. Its purpose is to help you develop your craft and your manuscript. Optional assistance can support that work, but the ideas, judgement and decisions remain yours. We do not promise a finished book at the press of a button.

Which AI tools can I connect?

Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT (developer mode, paid plans, on the web), Gemini (the Gemini CLI, and the Gemini app for personal accounts in the US), Codex, Cursor and OpenCode, and any app that supports MCP connections. The connect guide has the exact steps for each. Connecting is part of Onwarder Cloud, and its free trial.

Can a connected AI change my book?

No. The connection is read-only. Your AI can read the books you allow, check a draft against your story facts and suggest changes in the conversation. Anything that goes into the manuscript, you put there.

I don't write LitRPG. Is this for me?

Yes. Fiction is our focus, from a first novel to a long-running series. Fantasy, LitRPG and progression fiction have extra depth, but their game mechanics are optional. You do not need levels, spells or a stat block to write here.

Can I write nonfiction here?

You can draft nonfiction prose, and scene-based tools can suit memoir and narrative nonfiction. Onwarder is currently fiction-first. A complete citations, footnotes, bibliography and specialist nonfiction formatting workflow is not available yet.

Do I need to buy AI credits from Onwarder?

No. We do not sell AI credits, and Cloud does not include model usage. A connected tool runs on your own Claude, ChatGPT or other provider plan, within that plan's limits and charges.

Where does my book live?

With no account, it saves on the device you write on. Clearing the browser's site data removes a browser library, so save it to a file now and then; open that file on another device to carry on there. With Cloud, one library is on every device you sign in to, even offline, and it syncs by itself. How your work is saved.
