Find and replace
Search the whole book, a chapter or a scene, step through every match, and rename a character everywhere in one go, with one Undo to put it all back.
Find searches your writing as it is now, including words you typed a second ago. It never pauses saving.
Find something
- Press Cmd+F on a Mac or Ctrl+F on Windows and Linux, or choose Find in book (the magnifying glass) above the page. On a phone, tap Find in book on the bar above the keyboard.
- Type what you are looking for.
- Matches are highlighted and counted, for example 3 of 41, in 12 scenes.
- Press Enter for the next match and Shift+Enter for the previous one, or use the arrows. If the next match is in another scene, Onwarder opens that scene for you.
When you reach the end, it goes round again and says Back to the first match.
Press Esc, or choose the close button, to stop. Before you select or step to a match, this takes you back to where you were typing before opening Find. After you select or step to a match, that match stays selected, so you can type straight over it.
On a phone, Done selects the match shown on the page, even if you have not stepped to it. If there is no match, it takes you back to where you were typing.
Narrow the search
- Search in: This book, This chapter or This scene.
- Match case (shown as Aa): Ann will not find ann.
- Whole words (shown as W): Ann will not find Anne.
On a phone these are under Find options (the … in the find bar).
If nothing turns up, Onwarder says No matches, and tells you if an option is the reason, for example No matches with Whole words on.
Replace one match
- Press Cmd+Option+F on a Mac or Ctrl+H on Windows and Linux, or choose Replace in the find bar.
- Type the new words in Replace with.
- Choose Replace (or press Enter). Onwarder replaces the current match and moves to the next.
Each single replacement can be undone with the usual Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z.
Replace everywhere
Renamed a character? Changed grey to pewter throughout?
- Fill in what to find and what to replace it with.
- Choose Replace all… (on a phone, All).
- Onwarder lists every place it will change, grouped by chapter and scene, with a line of context around each. Untick any you want to leave alone.
- Choose Replace 41 (the number follows your ticks).
Onwarder tells you Replaced 41 in 12 scenes. and shows Undo in the find bar. Undo puts every changed scene back in one go. If you have edited one of those scenes since, Onwarder leaves that scene as it is and tells you which.
Leaving Replace with empty removes the words instead; the button then reads Remove 41.
Good to know
- Find looks at your prose. It skips scene breaks, and in LitRPG and progression books it skips System lines.
- Replace all works on up to 500 matches at a time. Narrow the search if you have more.
- If you see You’re offline. Replace all will be ready when you’re back online., reconnect and try again. Finding still works offline.
- In the story bible, each entry has Find “Name” in the book, which fills in Find for you.
