How your work is saved

Onwarder is free, and your writing saves on the device you write on, as you write. To move it, save a file and open it somewhere else. With Onwarder Cloud, the paid part, your whole library is on every device you sign in to, backed up as you write.

Where your work lives

This device

Free, no account

Your library saves as you write, in the browser you use and in Onwarder for Mac, Windows and Linux.

A file you save

Free

A .onwarder file of one book or your whole library. Keep it anywhere, and open it on another device.

Onwarder Cloud

Paid, free for your first 30 writing days

One library on every device you sign in to, even offline.

As it works in this release.

Without Cloud

With no account, Onwarder saves your library in the browser you write in, as you write. The free library opens in a phone's browser too. Onwarder for Mac, Windows and Linux keeps the library on your computer in the same way.

That copy lives only in that browser. Clearing the browser's site data, or writing in a private window, can remove it. Protect browser storage, under Storage & cloud in the library, asks the browser to keep it, but cannot stop it being cleared, so save a file too.

Moving work between devices

Without Cloud, you move work by hand. Save to file makes a.onwarder file of one book, or of the whole library with its story bibles, history and artwork. Open a file on another device adds those books to the library there. It never replaces a book that is already in it.

The file is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere private. Once a book is open on two devices, the copies are separate: changes on one do not reach the other. In the browser library, both actions are under Storage & cloud.

With Cloud

Cloud is the paid part of Onwarder: $10 a month or $99 a year, free for your first 30 days you write on.

With Cloud there is one library, and it is on every device you sign in to: your computer, your phone and any browser. You can write with no connection; your changes go when you are back online. Everything else syncs by itself.

If two devices change the same words, Onwarder asks which to keep. Nothing is lost: until you choose, both versions are kept, and afterwards the other one stays in the scene's history.

Computers and browsers sync while Onwarder is open. Phones sync while Onwarder is open, and sometimes in the background when your phone allows it.

The first time you sign in on a device that already has books, Onwarder asks before adding them to Cloud.

Every change is backed up as you write, with versions you can go back to, and Cloud keeps backups of your whole library: books, story bibles, history and artwork. If a laptop is lost, sign in on another device and your writing is there.

Cloud storage is 10 GB on Cloud and 1 GB on the free trial. Your books, their history, imported files and map images count towards it, and so do backups. Cloud also runs what has to be online: private reader links, a public page for each book, your connected AI and the Chronicle email.

A file you save is still yours to keep anywhere: the copy that does not depend on any account.

If Cloud ends

If the free trial ends without a subscription, or your subscription ends with no free writing days left:

Renew while your Cloud books are still there and they are kept. Renewal after deletion keeps your account but does not bring back deleted books.

Sync pauses when Cloud ends. After deletion, renew and deliberately sync again to put writing from a device back in Cloud.

If you delete your account

Deleting your account erases your Cloud copy, its history and files, and readers' comments on your books. Books saved on your devices, and files you saved, stay yours: we cannot reach them. The page on how to delete your account and datagives the timings and what records remain.

Whatever you choose, save a file of anything you cannot bear to lose, and keep it somewhere other than the device you write on.
