Install Onwarder on Linux
Use the AppImage, which updates itself, or the .deb on Ubuntu 24.04 and later. Your library stays on your computer.
Onwarder for Linux runs on x64 PCs. It is free and works without an account. There are two ways to install it.
Choose a download
On onwarder.com, choose Linux.
- Download AppImage is the usual choice. It keeps itself up to date. It needs FUSE and a system that allows its sandbox.
- Download .deb is under Other downloads and checksums. Use it on Ubuntu 24.04 and later, and on Debian and systems built on them. You update it yourself when Onwarder tells you a new version is out.
The checksums file is in the same place if you want to check your download.
Install the AppImage
- Make the downloaded file executable. In most file managers, open its Properties, then Permissions, and allow it to run as a program. In a terminal, run
chmod +xfollowed by the file name. - Open it.
If you see Install Onwarder for Ubuntu, your system does not allow the AppImage’s sandbox. Install the .deb instead; any books you started stay on your computer.
Install the .deb
Open the downloaded file with your software installer, or run sudo apt install followed by the path to the file. Onwarder then appears with your other applications.
When a new version is out, Onwarder shows A new version is on onwarder.com with Download Onwarder. Download the new .deb and install it over the old one. Your books stay as they are.
Start your first book
- In Start a book, type a working title.
- Choose Start writing.
Your book opens with Chapter One and an Untitled scene. Onwarder saves as you write. See Your first book.
Where your books are kept
Your library is saved in your home folder’s application data. To keep a copy elsewhere, open Settings (Ctrl+,), then Storage and backup, and choose Save to file. Onwarder can also copy your library to a folder by itself under Settings, Recovery, Automatic backups.
