Write on more than one device

With Onwarder Cloud your whole library follows you between computer, browser and phone. You are asked only when two devices changed the same words.

With Onwarder Cloud (or its free trial), there is one library, and it is on every device you sign in to. Write a chapter on your Mac in the morning and it is waiting on your phone on the train. There is nothing to press: it happens as you write.

You are only asked to choose when two devices changed the same words, or the same detail, before either heard about the other. Everything else sorts itself out.

Turn it on

  1. Sign in to Onwarder with your Cloud account on the device. (Without Cloud there is no sync: your books stay on that device, and you can move them with a file.)
  2. If the device already has books on it, Onwarder asks once: Add the 12 books on this Mac to Onwarder Cloud? Choose Add them.
  3. Keep writing. Under Your books you will see Syncing your library: 4 of 12 books while the first sync runs. Books appear on the shelf as they arrive.

If you choose Not now, sync stays off on that device and Onwarder does not ask again. You can turn it on whenever you like in Settings, Storage and Cloud, Turn on sync.

See whether everything is synced

On the library home, the word beside Settings tells you how things stand. In a book, the save line at the foot of the page carries the same news, for example Saved 14:02 · synced. Select either one to see the details.

You see What it means
Synced This device has sent its changes and has the latest from your other devices.
Syncing Changes are on their way. Keep writing.
Offline No connection. Everything is still saved on this device and goes when you are back online.
Sync delayed Onwarder has been trying for a while. Your words are safe here; choose Try now in the details.
1 choice to make Two devices changed the same thing. See below.
Cloud paused Your Cloud subscription has ended. Every book is still on this device.
Storage full Your Cloud space is full. New changes wait on this device.
Update needed This copy of Onwarder is too old to keep up. Update it.
Sign in to sync You have been signed out. Sign in again.
Sync is off You turned sync off on this device, or removed it from your account.

Writing offline is normal. Phones and computers keep everything you write, and send it the next time they have a connection. Computers and browsers sync while Onwarder is open. Phones sync while Onwarder is open, and sometimes in the background when your phone allows it.

When two devices changed the same words

Say you fixed a sentence on your phone on the train, then later changed the same sentence on your laptop before the phone had a signal. Onwarder will not guess which you meant. It keeps both, and asks.

You will see a note at the top of the scene: This scene was also changed on your iPhone. Choose which version to keep. It never interrupts you mid-sentence: it waits until you pause.

  1. Select Choose a version.
  2. Read the two versions side by side. Only the paragraphs that differ are shown, with the differing words marked. Use Next difference to step through them.
  3. Choose one of:
    • Keep the Mac version (it names the other device; for the version from the device you are on, it reads Keep the version from this Mac) to keep those words.
    • Keep both to leave the version in your book where it is and add the other as a sketch just below the scene, so you can take what you want from it.

Whatever you choose, the other version is kept in the scene’s history, so nothing is lost. If you are not ready, choose Decide later; the note stays until you decide.

On a phone the two versions are shown one at a time. Switch between them at the top, and the button underneath always names the version you are looking at.

Other things that can need a choice

  • A detail in your story bible, a chapter title or a scene card. The field shows both values with Keep this under each.
  • Something deleted on one device and changed on another. You will see Keep it and Delete it.

Moving scenes never asks. If two devices moved the same scene, the later move wins, and the scene’s history shows what happened, with Move it back if you want the other place.

Every open choice is listed in the details behind the sync word, and marked with a small ring in the scene list and the story bible.

Turn sync off on one device

  1. Open Settings, then Storage and Cloud.
  2. Choose Turn off sync on this Mac (or this PC, this browser, this phone), then confirm.

Your books stay on that device. They stop updating from your other devices, and changes made there no longer reach them.

To stop a device you no longer have from syncing, find it under Devices in the same place and choose Remove.

Signing in as someone else

If you sign in with a different account on a device whose library already syncs with another account, Onwarder stops and asks before anything moves: This library syncs with another account. Choose Sign out if that was a mistake. Nothing from either account is mixed until you say so.
